Competitive Sports
Watching competitive sports is interesting, especially if your in a gym full of rowdy people who are willing to get into the sport. In theory we would all cheer for every one when they do something good in a sport. In the Absolutely True Diary of a Part Time Indian the attitude that is in the basketball games hits really close to true. The Indians were booing Arnold for reasons other then sports but the Reardon fans were booing on the principle that the Indians were on the other team. When Arnold took the ball out of Rowdy's hands in the second game and the Reardon team exploded in cheering you can see were the loyalty is. Arnold is an Indian and they are playing Indians but since Arnold is on the Reardon team that is over looked. It's amazing the things that people will over look, things that are flaws or in this case just a fact of life, or their racism or what ever to give their sports team a leg up.

Forgiveness?
Forgiveness is an interesting idea. Christians believe that God forgives all and that they are supposed to forgive others when wronged. There really isn't any of that in the world. If your car gets damaged by some one with no insurance you sue they as punishment. If some one posts your blog empty then you post their blog empty, I mean revenge is sweet. Forgiveness is the hardest thing because you still want to take down the person who wronged you any way possible. In this book Arnold is always talking about how Indians spend days plotting their revenge. About how his rules of fighting revolve completely around revenge. I think the reason that his grandma was included in this book was to show that he thinks that even though the world is a hard cruel place there are still people out there who will give you forgiveness with out breaking your thumbs or something terrible like that.
It's a funny idea forgiveness.

Short story blog
The short story that I read about the twisted life of Angus Bethune, is interesting to say the least. Angus' parents are divorced and remarried as same sex couples. In addition he is uh, large, to say it politely. It's not all bad though. He's a world class football player and quote "incredibly quick for a fat kid." He also has an IQ safely in the three digits. So even though he's talented he's not exactly good looking and he is over weight so he gets picked on a lot. Well this isn't a problem until he gets elected Winter Ball king.
The story is about how he deals with this problem for some one as socially awkward as himself being thrust into the public spot light.
While it's not a story I would pick up on my own if your bored and have a few minutes of free time it's an entertaining read.

Aboslutely true diary of a part time indian blog 3
When Arnold and Gordy are talking about how the native Americans now hate Arnold for going to school of the rez Arnold says at the end of the chapter "well now we have a tribe of two." It's interesting to see how people who don't have much in common find the one thing that they have in common just so they won't be lonely. Deployed soldiers do this a lot. Soldiers who don't have a thing in common other than the fact that they are soldiers can get along better then any other group of people on the planet because they are scared and lonely away from home. Arnold is the same way, scared and lonely away from his home.

Aboslutely true diary of a part time indian blog 2
The psychological aspect of this book in regards to preserving culture is interesting. Cultural pressures on young people on the reservations is to not leave the reservation but to stay on the poverty stricken island. You'd think that parents and family members would want their children and family members to go and get a good life and a chance at a better world, however the cultural pressure is to stay a Spokane Indian even if your poor. It's fascinating about how a culture that won't feed your family of put a roof over your head can be such a powerful force in some one's life.

Aboslutely true diary of a part time indian blog 1
It's interesting to see how Junior deals with the huge scale of death that visits him in this book. After three of the people closest to him die he kind of temporarily snaps. After that he tries to find some thing to take his mind of the fact that he will never see these people again. I personally have never lost as many friends as the characters in this book but because I have family in the army and I enjoy reading about the army death is something I hear about a lot. When I had had family members die I do my best not to think about the fact that they are gone until I've gotten so used to the fact that they are gone.
People deal with death in there own ways, binge drinking and drugs are probably no the best things but what ever gets you through the nights.
